Spring Cleaning Checklist for Your Flooring
Apr 14, 2016
Spring is in full swing, but it’s not too late for spring cleaning! And while you are at it, don’t forget to spring-clean one very important surface—your floors. Floors and floor coverings generally get a good amount of cleaning in most households. However, this doesn’t mean they can’t use a good deep cleaning every once in a while. Here are a few floor cleaning ideas from our Maryland floor cleaning company to make sure you don’t miss a single spot!
Get in the Vents
If you have return vents in your floor, don’t forget to give them some TLC. Remove the covers and vacuum the inside well. Chances are, your vents are packed with dog hair, twisty ties and similar small debris. Cleaning them will help improve the efficiency of your HVAC unit, as well as help with air quality.
Steam-Clean the Carpets
It’s a good idea to have your carpets professionally cleaned at least once a year. No matter how much vacuuming you do, it doesn’t get rid of all the dust and does nothing for stains. Even if your carpet is not visible dirty or stained, it’s still a good idea to steam-clean it. Heat and moisture help extract allergens, dust and smells from deep within the carpet, making your indoor air cleaner. After steam-cleaning, you will notice the difference right away: old stains are gone, carpet smells fresh, and looks a few shades lighter!
Clean Area Rugs
Small rugs, such as the kitchen sink rug, you may be able to throw in the washing machine. Do a soaking cycle first to make sure the detergent has the time to penetrate deep into the fibers. You can even wash some rugs and mats with rubber backing, but do NOT put a rubber-back mat in a dryer—it will probably melt. To be safe, read the tag on your rug first to see how it should be cleaned. For large rugs, it may be necessary to steam-clean them similar to carpets.
Get Between the Tiles
If you have tile flooring, you know that keeping the grout lines clean is a losing battle. Every time you mop your tile floors, you just end up pushing dirt and dust deeper between the tiles. So during your spring cleaning frenzy be sure to scrub those grout lines well. Unfortunately, some types of grout, especially those not properly sealed, can absorb dirt deep into their porous surface. To successfully clean this sort of dirt, you may need extra help of steam and pressure. If your tile flooring has never been cleaned with professional equipment, now might be a good time to do this!
Make Hardwood Shine
Hardwood flooring can be swept and vacuumed. Both cleaning procedures remove dirt, dust and hair, but they don’t remove stains or make your floors shiny. In essence, they make your flooring feel clean, but it still doesn’t look the part. To fix this, you need to wet-clean your hardwood every once in a while with manufacturer-approved cleaners. Keep in mind that hardwood generally doesn’t like moisture, so avoid creating puddles and drips while cleaning your floors. You especially don’t want water to get between the boards. If your hardwood has several years of dirt and grime that call for a more thorough cleaning, give Kent Clean a call and we’ll be happy to help!
