How to Make Your Couch Look Like New

Dec 16, 2015

The extended family is coming over for Christmas and you are almost ready. The guest bedrooms are cleaned, the tree is up, the dinner is planned, but what are you going to do about that old couch in the living room? After a few years with pets and kids using it as a bed, a table and a bouncy castle, you only wish you could find a big enough sheet to cover it up. But don’t go shopping for a couch cover just yet—there are a few things you could do to make your couch look like new again, and our Maryland upholstery cleaning experts are here to help.

Wash It

No, not with an odor eliminator. It may make your couch smell nice, but it won’t do anything for the stains. Some couches have removable cushion covers that you can take off and throw in a washing machine. If your couch came with matching throw pillows, check them too and see if you can find zippers or buttons on the side. You may need to do some soaking before you start the wash cycle to get stubborn stains out.

Be sure to zip or button your cushion covers before putting them in the washer. Many manufacturers don’t care to properly secure the edges of the seams, which may cause them to get caught on another cushion’s zipper and unravel.

Scrub it

If the cushion covers on your couch are not removable, then you could attempt to scrub your couch clean with a cleaning solution. Before you start, it’s important to know what your couch is made of and what it can be cleaned with. Look around the back of your couch (or on the inside of the fabric) for a tag. Just like clothing, most modern couches have a tag with care instructions. The instructions would typically tell you whether your couch can be cleaned with water-based cleaners, solvent-based cleaners, both or none at all.

Steam it

If the tag on your couch has a big “X,” this typically means that your couch can’t be cleaned with either water-based or solvent-based detergents. Your remaining options are vacuuming or hiring a professional steam-cleaner. Or you could hire a professional upholstery cleaner even if your couch can be cleaned by hand. You have enough holiday preparations to worry about—why not let someone else take care of the couch?

At Kent Clean, we use commercial steam-cleaning equipment that allows the steam to penetrate into upholstery, loosen up stains and dirt and lift them away. We don’t just remove stains—we also get rid of pet dander and hair, dirt lines from contact with clothing and years of crumbs! It will take you hours of hand-scrubbing, vacuuming and drying to even come close to these results.

Steam-cleaning is also great because it cleans your entire couch and not just the stained area. When you treat just the stain, you often end up with a clean spot and the rest of the couch looking dingy. Give us a call or contact online today and let us help you make your couch look like new again.

"WOW, WOW, WOW. I don't know what else to say. With two dogs and a 2 year old running around the house, our carpets and furniture need cleaning on a regular basis. It's nice to know that all I need to do is pick up the phone and I have no more worries. In this day and age, it is a very pleasant surprise to come across a company who will do what they say they will do when they say they will do it and with very little supervision. Kudos to Kent Clean!!! Thanks Larry!"
