Are You Cleaning Every Layer of Your Carpet?

Nov 6, 2020

During the fall and winter months, it’s easy to dirty your carpet. You probably find yourself cleaning it more often. You clean up any stains that you see and vacuum it often, but do you think that you’re cleaning every layer of your carpet? Your carpet has multiple layers, and you may not be cleaning all of them.

Layers

Every carpet is different. However, most carpets that are installed by a professional are equipped with four layers: a surface layer, a backing, a pad, and the subfloor.

The Surface

The surface layer is what you see. It has the pattern or color that makes up the carpet’s aesthetic appearance. This layer can be nylon, polyester, or wool. It’s the easiest layer to reach and clean.

Backing

The backing layer is what holds the carpet together. Sometimes the backing can be one layer but other times there can be multiple layers of backing. It’s easy for stains to reach this layer without you realizing you haven’t cleaned it.

Pad

This layer is the part of the carpet that makes it pleasant to walk on. It’s made up of finders like nylon, polypropylene, and polyester. It’s the next layer that aids in the overall comfort of walking on carpet.

Subfloor

The final layer of a carpet is the subfloor. This layer is what the entire carpet is attached to. It’s usually made out of plywood or oriented strand board (OSB) panels.

Cleaning Options

When it comes to  cleaning the various layers of your carpet you have options.

Vacuum

The easiest and most convenient way to clean your carpet. If you see debris on your carpet, you can use your vacuum cleaner to get rid of most of it. Regularly vacuuming your carpet is a great way to maintain a clean surface appearance and avoid developing deeply penetrated stains that are harder to clean.

Cleaning Solution

If you see a stain on your carpet that cannot be cleaned using a vacuum, you can try cleaning it using a cleaning solution. Start by using hot water and a damp towel. If that doesn’t get rid of the stain, you can opt for a high-quality carpet cleaning solution. Be careful when spot cleaning your carpet because you could accidentally make the stain get into the deeper layers of the carpet.

Professional Cleaners

If you’ve exhausted all your cleaning options and your carpet still appears dirty, it’s a good idea to hire a Maryland floor care specialist for a deep clean. They have the tools and equipment needed to get rid of any stain and will make your carpet look as good as new.

SATISFACTION
"WOW, WOW, WOW. I don't know what else to say. With two dogs and a 2 year old running around the house, our carpets and furniture need cleaning on a regular basis. It's nice to know that all I need to do is pick up the phone and I have no more worries. In this day and age, it is a very pleasant surprise to come across a company who will do what they say they will do when they say they will do it and with very little supervision. Kudos to Kent Clean!!! Thanks Larry!"
