4 Common Misconceptions about Floor Care

Jun 5, 2018

You might think scouring the internet for floor cleaning tips and tricks is the key to a cleaner home with exceptionally less effort, but don’t believe everything you read online! Many of these “hacks” can actually be less than ideal for your floors. Let’s take a look at 4 common misconceptions about floor care, so you’ll know what to avoid.

4 Common Misconceptions about Floor Care

Misconception #1 – Dusters and Vacuums are Interchangeable

Although popular floor dusters have dusting cloths specifically made to trap dirt and dust, there’s still plenty of debris that builds up on your floors that the duster isn’t capable of removing. Dusters are more likely to move dirt around your floors and aren’t a proper substitute for the vacuum. Dusting then vacuuming or steam cleaning is a better method to use with non-carpeted floors.

Misconception #2 – Vinegar is an Efficient Cleaner

Because vinegar is acidic, it can cut through dirt and kill bacteria. Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, vinegar only really touts these benefits if it’s used at full strength. When cleaning with vinegar, most people add a cap or two to a bucket of water, which weakens its acidic properties significantly. Another point to consider is that if you use too much vinegar, the acid can eat away at wood and damage natural stone floors.

Misconception #3 – If It Ain’t Dirty, Don’t Clean It

Although this might not be advice you find online, it’s something we’ve all been guilty of at one time or another. On the surface, your carpets may look spotless. But if it’s been a while since you’ve vacuumed or steam cleaned, there’s guaranteed to be a lot of dirt, dust, and bacteria hidden in those fibers.

Misconception #4 – You Can Never Use Too Much Bleach

Although bleach can help lighten stains and make things appear cleaner, it doesn’t fully remove dirt – it is much more beneficial when used as a sanitizer, as it excels at killing bacteria. Using too much bleach can permanently discolor your floors and can be harmful when inhaled for extended periods of time. When it comes to cleaning your home in general, more of a product doesn’t always mean a better clean.

"WOW, WOW, WOW. I don't know what else to say. With two dogs and a 2 year old running around the house, our carpets and furniture need cleaning on a regular basis. It's nice to know that all I need to do is pick up the phone and I have no more worries. In this day and age, it is a very pleasant surprise to come across a company who will do what they say they will do when they say they will do it and with very little supervision. Kudos to Kent Clean!!! Thanks Larry!"
