How Does Power Washing Work?

May 18, 2017

What is power washing?

Power washing, also called pressure washing, is when high-pressure water spray is used to remove dirt, dust, mud, paint, or other unwanted material from surfaces and objects. Invented in 1950, the pressure washer contains a motor that drives a high-pressure water pump, hose, and gun-like switch with a trigger. There are many different nozzle types available that allow the user to spray all kinds of surfaces and objects without the risk of harming them.

In most cases, using water alone can clear surfaces of dirt and grime simply due to the extremely high pressure at which the water is expelled from the washer. For tougher jobs, though, specific soaps and detergents are available to help with the deep-cleaning process. It’s important to note that the water coming from a power washer is being expelled at a much higher pressure and velocity than from a normal garden hose. Because of this, power washers can cause damage to certain surfaces if used improperly, and can cause minor injury to any person coming in contact with the spray.

What’s safe to power wash?

  • Driveways
  • Concrete floors
  • Windows
  • Pools (when empty, of course)
  • Outdoor furniture
  • Boats
  • Trailers
  • Landscaping machinery (riding mower, lawn aerator, etc.)
  • Cars
  • Brick walls
  • Wooden decks
  • Tile walkways/patios

What’s not safe to power wash?

It is highly suggested that power washers not be used on rooftops, as the pressure can cause weak shingles to come out of place. Surfaces that have been painted should also warrant caution when power-washing, as high-pressure water can remove paint very easily. Many people swear by pressure washing their vehicles when they get very dirty, but as always, it’s important to be mindful of the paint and ensure no minor chips/dents occur.

Why hire a pro?

Because of the safety issues that accompany using a cleaning device with such high force, it’s always best to work with a professional power washing company. A power washing expert will be able to determine the best way to power wash your dirty or tarnished surfaces and ensure that nothing gets damaged in the process.

SATISFACTION
"WOW, WOW, WOW. I don't know what else to say. With two dogs and a 2 year old running around the house, our carpets and furniture need cleaning on a regular basis. It's nice to know that all I need to do is pick up the phone and I have no more worries. In this day and age, it is a very pleasant surprise to come across a company who will do what they say they will do when they say they will do it and with very little supervision. Kudos to Kent Clean!!! Thanks Larry!"
